One week, you’re confident, energized, ready to take on the world. The next week, you’re crying at commercials and can’t remember why you thought that decision made sense three days ago.
You’re not losing your mind. You’re not weak. And you’re definitely not alone.
You’re just feeling your hormones.
The Four Phases of Your Menstrual Cycle
Phase 1: Menstruation (Days 1-7)
Hormones: Estrogen and progesterone at their lowest
Emotionally: This is often a time for introspection. Many women feel withdrawn, quiet, or deeply reflective.
What you need: Rest, warmth, nourishing foods, gentle movement only, permission to slow down
Phase 2: Follicular Phase (Days 8-14)
Hormones: Estrogen rising from low to peak
Emotionally: This is your “rise” phase. Mental clarity returning, creativity sparking, social energy increasing.
What you need: New projects, social connection, challenging workouts, brain-stimulating activities
Phase 3: Ovulation (Days 15-17)
Hormones: Estrogen at peak; LH surge triggers egg release
Emotionally: Peak confidence, maximum social energy, highest libido, best mood of the cycle.
What you need: Connection, high-energy activities, confidence to go after goals
Phase 4: Luteal Phase (Days 18-28)
Hormones: Progesterone rises; estrogen decreases gradually
Emotionally: Progesterone is sedating. You might feel quieter, more introspective, more prone to worry.
What you need: Rest and comfort, gentle exercise, nourishing foods, lower social demands, boundaries
Why You Feel So Different Each Week
Here’s the thing nobody explained to you: you’re not inconsistent. You’re not unreliable. You’re not “too emotional.”
You’re a woman with a menstrual cycle. Your hormones are doing what hormones do — shifting constantly, affecting your brain chemistry, your energy levels, your mood.
The key is recognizing:
- The feelings are real, but they’re also temporary.
- The needs are different each phase.
- You’re not broken. You’re just cycling.
The Emotional Reality Nobody Warns You About
PMS Isn’t Imaginary: The week or two before your period, you might feel things more intensely. This is progesterone at work.
The Social Energy Shift: Follicular and ovulation phase? You’re a social butterfly. Luteal phase? You want to be left alone.
The Creativity Wave: Late follicular phase is peak creative energy. Luteal phase is when you feel creatively blocked.
The goal isn’t to eliminate hormonal fluctuations. It’s to understand them, work with them, and stop shaming yourself for being a woman with a menstrual cycle.
The more you understand your cycle, the less power it has to make you feel lost in your own life. 💜
